2018 Colchester Medical Society President
Mr James Sheldrick
Mr James Sheldrick
Having been lucky enough to attend the Cambridge Grammar school for Boys and benefit from the teaching skills and enthusiasm of its Headmaster and masters, I gained a place at St Thomas's Hospital Medical School in London in 1978.
An integrated BSc in Physiology allowed me to work at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London and with the Navy in Gosport. My first house job was at St Thomas's was in vascular surgery and ophthalmology but also covered cardiothoracic surgery.
The usual nomadic existence of doctors in senior house officer posts followed in neurology, neurosurgery and ophthalmology posts around the country all with a view to becoming an ophthalmologist. During these years I was commissioned in the Territorial Army to 254 Field Ambulance Unit based in Cambridge.
Post fellowship I worked in the Department of General Practice in Queen's Medical Centre, University of Nottingham where I gained my MPhil looking at Eye Disease in General Practice.
Our first settled home was in Leicester where I worked as first Lecturer / registrar then senior registrar in Ophthalmology. Both of our daughters were born in Leicester and it holds many happy memories for Caroline and I.
In 1994 we spent 6 months living in Vancouver, British Columbia where I worked as a fellow in Oculoplastic and orbital surgery under the guidance of Dr Jack Rootman, Dr Frank Buffam and Dr Peter Dolman who patiently and kindly shared their wisdom and to whom I am truly grateful.
Attracted by the friendliness and warmth of the people in the department at the Essex County Hospital and the feeling that Colchester would be a wonderful place to bring up a family, we moved here in 1996 and I took up Consultancy at the Essex County Hospital.
I love spending time with family and friends, travel, scuba, wildlife adventures, birdwatching, gardening and DIY!
