COLCHESTER MEDICAL SOCIETY AGM 2017
ARCHIVIST’S REPORT
A Blue Plaque to Dr Ruth Bensusan-Butt (1877-1957) was unveiled on 5 June 2016 by Dr Elizabeth Hall at the Minories where she had lived and practised as a Family practitioner. This was a joint venture with the Colchester Civic Society. The Society’s medical books and memorabilia including old instruments were displayed at the Albert Sloman Library of the University of Essex from September 2016 to February 2017. It proved to have been a very popular and well attended exhibition. A Study Day for Sixth Formers from local schools planning to study Medicine, was held at the Iceni Centre in June 2016 with financial support from the Society.
A Project to record the history of the Essex County Hospital from 1948 to its expected closure this year, is being undertaken in conjunction with the History Dept at the University of Essex. We are contributing to the cost therefore all the memorabilia and old medical instruments which the Colchester Medical Society holds in trust, will be catalogued. Over the past 10 years I have been greatly helped by the enthusiastic involvement of John Grice who has recently died aged 70. He was elected Honorary Member for his outstanding contribution to the Society in setting up and running our websites: colchestermedicalsociety and colchesterscaringpast. He organised the funding and erection of our permanent exhibition at the Primary Care Centre as well as formulating the many ideas and events which have kept the Society in the public eye here in Colchester.
